Keeping Christ in Christmas

Three quarters of Americans agree that most Americans have forgotten the real meaning of Christmas.

  • Worth Noting – The poll did not define the “real meaning of Christmas,” potentially allowing participants to project their own meanings onto the holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.

WHY IT MATTERS – As religious affiliation and church attendance have declined in America, Christmas celebrations have become increasingly secular.

THE QUESTION – Ipsos asked 1,023 U.S. adults if they thought “most Americans have forgotten the real meaning of Christmas.”

  • 75 percent agreed
  • 16 percent disagreed
  • 9 percent were not sure

STRONGLY AGREE – Those answering “strongly agree” varied by religion, party affiliation and age.

  • All Americans – 42 percent
  • Christians – 50 percent
  • No Religion – 29 percent
  • Republicans – 52 percent
  • Democrats – 33 percent
  • Ages 18-24 – 35 percent
