Americans Favor the Expansion of Nuclear Power

The poll finds a 14-point jump in support since 2020.

WHY IT MATTERS – Nuclear power emits zero carbon and is a proven technology that could provide clean energy.

THE NUMBERS – A Pew Research Center poll asked Americans whether they favor more nuclear power plants to generate electricity in the country. It revealed that 57 % say they favor this, up from 43 % who said this in 2020.

Attitudes regarding nuclear power have long differed by gender. The results by gender follow:

  • 71 %– Men
  • 44 %– Women

Attitudes regarding nuclear power have also long differed by party affiliation. The results by party affiliation follow:

  • 66 %– Republicans 
  • 50 %– Democrats 

Republicans have supported nuclear power expansion in greater shares than Democrats each time asked this question since 2016.

THE BOTTOM LINE– More Americans see the need for more nuclear power plants to generate electricity in the country.
