More Favor Allowing Pandemic Welfare Aid to Expire Than Continuing It

Among those who want the aid to continue, most want spending cuts to pay for it.

A plurality of Americans favor ending the additional welfare spending Congress passed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

WHY IT MATTERS – Renewal of many of the programs, including food aid for pregnant and new mothers, will be an area of contention in the budget negotiations.

  • Congress must pass a spending bill by September 30th to avoid a government shutdown.

OF NOTE – The issue is divisive. Key segments needed to build a New Majority coalition favor continuing the expansion of the welfare programs.
