Why the “Bidenomics” Pitch is Falling Flat

An analysis of top issues for 2024 among different voter segments.

“Inflation and the cost of living” is by far the most chosen option when Americans are asked to pick their three most important issues for 2024.

  • This is a distinct option from “jobs and the economy,” which came in at almost half as important among all voters.

WHY IT MATTERS – Joe Biden has tried to use solid job creation numbers in his case for why so-called “Bidenomics” is working, but the top issue for voters is inflation.

  • Candidates with a convincing and popular agenda to combat inflation will be speaking to voters’ No. 1 concern.

FEW SINGLE-ISSUE VOTERS – Voters have other concerns that will need to be addressed, including gun violence, the future of Social Security and Medicare, health care, and corruption in government.

HOW TO USE THIS DATA – Results show how to tailor topics to different audiences and what issues will need to be included in candidates’ agendas if they want to build a majority coalition.

Economic and safety concerns dominate among all voter groups.

  • Inflation/cost of living is the top issue among all groups except Democrats and Gen Z, who prioritize gun violence.
  • Jobs/economy comes in at a distant second among all voters – a tier 2 (of 3) issue – however, among Black, Asian, and Gen Z voters, it ranks in the top tier.
  • Gun violence is a tier 1 issue to Democrats, Asians, Blacks, and Gen Z and ranks higher than crime and safety for all groups except Republicans.
  • Undecided and Democrat leaning voters who show openness to America’s New Majority messages prioritize gun violence over crime.
  • Adding these voters to the New Majority will require developing solutions for gun violence that don’t alienate the conservative core of the coalition.

Other observations.

  • Black and Gen Z voters have the broadest array of issues important to them.
  • Republican voters have the most intense focus on a smaller number of issues.
  • Corruption in government registers as a tier 2 (of 3) issue for most groups, though this likely means different things to different voter segments.
  • Undecided and Democrat leaning voters who show openness to the America’s New Majority messages say health care and the environment are important issues.
  • Adding these voters to the New Majority will require developing solutions for these issues that don’t alienate the conservative core of the coalition.
