Majority of Americans Say Race Shouldn’t Be Factored into College Admissions

Seventy percent of Americans say colleges should not be allowed to consider race in the admissions process.

WHY IT MATTERS – Affirmative Action policies are an issue of political debate, and the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to release an opinion on the matter soon.

THE NUMBERS – A recent CBS News poll, asked Americans if colleges should be allowed to consider race in admissions.

  • 70 percent – Not allowed 
  • 30 percent – Allowed

When broken down by party affiliation, Republicans (82 percent) said it should not be allowed, Democrats (55 percent) said it should not be allowed, and Independents (74 percent) said it should not be allowed.

The poll also asked Americans if Affirmative Action programs should be continued.

  • 53 percent – Continued
  • 47 percent – Discontinued

BOTTOM LINE – Many Americans – including a majority of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents believe race should not be allowed to be considered in college admissions, and the debate over affirmative action policies continuing is split evenly.
