Most Americans Support Banning the Sale of U.S. Property and Oil Reserves to Foreign Adversaries

Three-quarters (73 percent) of Americans support prohibiting the sale of U.S. real estate, including farmland, to foreign adversaries including China and Russia.

WHY IT MATTERS – The sale of U.S. real estate and oil reserves to foreign adversaries causes economic concerns and many members of Congress and state legislatures are introducing legislation on the issue.

THE NUMBERS – A recent study at the Program for Public Consultation at the University of Maryland asked Americans “Do you favor or oppose the proposal that calls for the Executive Branch to stop the sale of any U.S. land or real estate to any entity that the Executive Branch believes is affiliated in some way with a government that is an adversary.”

  • 73 percent – Favor
  • 27 percent – Oppose

When broken down by political party, Republicans (84 percent) favor the proposal, Democrats (64 percent) favor the proposal, and Independents (69 percent) favor the proposal.

The study also asked Americans “Do you favor or oppose the proposal to prohibit the sale of oil from the U.S. oil reserves to any corporations from countries that are adversaries to the U.S.”

  • 72 percent – Favor
  • 28 percent – Oppose

When broken down by political party, Republicans (82 percent) favor the proposal, Democrats (65 percent) favor the proposal, and Independents (66 percent) favor the proposal.

BOTTOM LINE – Many Americans – Republicans, Democrats, and Independents favor proposals to prohibit the sale of U.S. real estate, farmland, and oil reserves to foreign adversaries.
