Three-in-Ten Americans Say Opioid Addiction Affects One or More Family Members

Familial addiction to all substances affects two-in-three Americans. 

Thirty percent of Americans have been impacted by familial opioid addiction, while two third of Americans have experienced some degree of familial alcohol or drug addiction, homelessness, hospitalization, or death because of such addictions.

WHY IT MATTERS – The raging opioid addiction crisis in the United States continues to negatively impact American families.

THE NUMBERS – Amid the opioid crisis that continues on, aA Kaiser Family Foundation poll asked Americans about their experience with addiction. It revealed the following: n average 30 percent of Americans say they or someone in their family has been addicted to opioids, with rural residents (42 percent) and white adults (33 percent) being the hardest groups hit.

Percent of adults who say that they or someone in their family have ever been addicted to opioids by community type:

  • 42 percent – Rural communities
  • 30 percent – Suburban communities
  • 23 percent – Urban communities

Percent of adults who say that they or someone in their family have ever been addicted to opioids by race/ethnicity:

  • 23 percent – Black
  • 28 percent – Hispanic
  • 33 percent– White

In general, one-in-five people report personal experience with addiction, while two-thirds also have family experience with addiction.
