Most Americans Support Banning TikTok But Gen Z Opposed

Nearly 2-in-3 voters support banning Tik-Tok unless the Chinese company that owns it sells and separates itself. However, a majority of Gen Z voters are opposed.

WHY IT MATTERS – The House is expected to pass legislation forcing a sale of TikTok soon. The Democrat controlled Senate and President Biden will have to decide whether to support legislation supported by most Americans but opposed by Gen Z voters – a key element of their coalition.

Key Findings:

  • 59% of Gen Z voters are regular TikTok users, while a plurality or majority of other age groups don’t have an account.
  • Most Americans know that TikTok is owned by a Chinese company, but Gen Z (61%) and frequent TikTok users (67%) are less aware than other Americans (80%).
  • 64% support banning TikTok unless the Chinese company that owns it sells and separates itself. Gen Z is the only demographic group opposed to a forced sale, with 32% in support and 55% opposed. Frequent TikTok users are similarly opposed, 35% in support and 56% opposed.
  • Voters are most concerned with the amount of time children spend on TikTok and the company sharing user information with the Chinese Communist Party.
